Limiting Beliefs – Are you wearing an invisible rucksack?

A person is not born with limiting beliefs, these are acquired over time. They typically arise from a chance comment by a teacher, family member or peers; ‘you’ll never amount to much’, ‘you’re not good enough”.

Sadly, these comments are often picked up and mentally carried for years, just like a loaded rucksack. They reduce confidence and create barriers, stopping you from being who you want to be. Sometimes, they can be just as if someone had physically pushed you back. You are left looking over your shoulder at who you could have been.

Just like any steady weight on the shoulders, these beliefs can even affect you physically. Your body stature can change; hunched shoulders and eyes downcast.

Are you wearing a rucksack?

Do you want to cut the straps of this rucksack, stand taller and look the world in the eye?

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Where did this belief come from and how old is it?
  • Who gave you this belief and how do you feel about them?
  • Do you respect them, are / were they always right?
  • What is their history?
  • What is this belief costing you now and in the longer term?

How will your life be different if you let it go?

Take time to answer each question truthfully. Go back over each one to see if you can find anything else. What have you found? How are you feeling?

Are you ready to slide the straps of the rucksack from your shoulders and throw it away? Do it now!

Feeling better, lighter, standing taller?

Well done! You have taken that important first step towards achieving your aspirations.
