Your vision drives your behaviour

Students and new graduates have to start somewhere if they want to become part of the workforce.

“I haven’t got any experience in the commercial world as I have only just finished full-time education.” It is appreciated not having the experience of the business world can be daunting, but preparing yourself as much as possible will reduce those nerves,

“I can’t give examples in the workplace.” It doesn’t matter – just take a look at each question and think about situations where you have arranged a party, holiday, out of school clubs, university activities, Student Union etc. You can demonstrate project management, organisational skills, managing deadlines, financial planning, people skills, self-motivation.

You are at an advantage as you have just left an institution where having to submit written projects and experience of exams has been plentiful.

During my time coaching graduates, I advise graduates to have a professional IP address. Social media is used more and more by companies to view candidates’ social platforms. Remove anything that would portray you in an unfavourable light.

Have a simple business card with name, email and contact number. Even with today’s technical communication, business cards are still very useful, easy to give out and easy to keep. When going to a networking event, or a business conference, add the date on a couple of your cards. Likewise, if you are given a business card write the date on it to aid future memory.

Due to the global pandemic, the job market has become more fluid. There has been a rapid rise in the use of internet platforms for interviewing. However, although at the moment first interviews are extensively on-line, gradually face-to-face interviews are being requested, so these should not be missed out in your preparation.
